An expanded partnership between SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings and the U.K.-based MPI Group will result in the broadening of the Trainthepainter program, a framework corporate educators can use to train contractors and craft workers in surface preparation and coating application, the association announced.

Developed in the U.K. by The MPI Group, Trainthepainter combines both classroom and hands-on modules to prepare individuals to apply for three SSPC certifications: SSPC Coating Application Specialist, C-7 Abrasive Blaster and C-12 Spray Applicator. SSPC and MPI Group began their partnership around the curriculum in 2014, working to expand the program internationally.

Thinking Globally

As part of the new agreement, SSPC and MPI Group will work as global strategic partners. SSPC, based in Pittsburgh, will administer the program in the U.S., Canada and South America, while MPI Group will continue to run the program in the U.K. and elsewhere internationally.

In expanding their existing training agreement, SSPC will license the rights to the Trainthepainter applicator training program created by MPI Group, and the two entities will become Global Strategic Partners, the association announced.

Trainthepainter involves both theoretical and practical units; the program includes three core modules—Protective Coatings Application, Abrasive Blast Cleaning and Spray Painting—and a Coating Applicator Specialist module. Units range from general health and safety practices and application methods to the science behind coatings and abrasives.

The across-the-pond partnership between SSPC and MPI Group reflects the significance of standardized training beyond national borders.

“Trainthepainter is a high quality program designed to fit the needs of painters of all skill levels and backgrounds, and it takes into account the international nature of the profession,” says SSPC Executive Director Bill Worms.

For MPI, the partnership with SSPC boosts brand recognition in the American market and beyond.

“Trainthepainter has been developed with the cooperation of a number of leading industry experts into a comprehensive training platform,” says MPI Group Managing Director Andrew Deere. “SSPC brings to the table over 65 years of expertise in coatings standards and training, and a worldwide network of professionals dedicated to raising the bar in the industry.”

MPI Group is not associated with the Master Painters Institute of Burnaby, B.C., Canada.
