4.10 - Compatibility

Objective: To understand the difference between compatibility (The ability for materials to adhere without adverse effects. Opposite to incompatible  ) and incompatibility in relation to industrial coatings (Paint - substance used for protection of surfaces ie steel from corrosion.). To appreciate that not all generic coatings (Paint - substance used for protection of surfaces ie steel from corrosion.) can be applied on top of each other, and provide long term performance.

  • All coatings (Paint - substance used for protection of surfaces ie steel from corrosion.) have some solvent (A liquid capable of dissolving another material, used in paints) content.
  • Solvents reduce viscosity and aid application.
  • Solvents are already mixed in the paint (Substance used for decorating or protecting a surface, sometimes referred to as coating).
  • Manufacturers usually recommend no more than 5% addition solvent (A liquid capable of dissolving another material, used in paints).
  • All solvents have different degrees of strength.
