Next year will mark 10 years since CAKE Commercial Services joined the Train the painter programme. In this time they have utilised our multitude of training programmes to ensure their employees develop the highest-quality skills and knowledge the industry has to offer. This week, we have chosen to spotlight CAKE and the work their team are currently undertaking, supported by the skills learnt through Train the painter.

Founded in New Zealand in 2003, CAKE Commercial Services provide specialised services including Protective Coatings & Blasting, Intumescent Coatings, Corrosion Mitigation and Passive Fire Protection, they have set themselves apart as a driver of industry excellence in safety, quality and leadership. They are continually pushing to develop enhanced ways to undertake their vast range of projects.

A stand-out project CAKE are undertaking is Te Kaha Stadium, located in Christchurch, NZ. With a capacity of 30,000, the stadium is a replacement for Lancaster Park, which was sadly damaged in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake and subsequently demolished in 2019. CAKE has been contracted to apply the intumescent coatings to the internal and external steel work and radial trusses, which consists of water-washing to remove soluble salts, abrasive blasting, followed by application of Interzinc-52, Interchar-3120, Interplus-1180, Interthane 870 to cater for C3 environments. With 15 of the 40 total radial trusses now in place, the project is well underway, and CAKE’s integral anti-corrosion services will ensure the stadium remains in good condition for decades to come.

Another key work stream for the Cake team is Tower Refurbishment, built on over 12 years of experience in tower maintenance across the country. The Train the painter programme ensures their commitment to quality, giving a deeper understanding of coating preparation and application. This rigorous training not only boosts the team’s confidence but also reassures clients of the network’s long-term asset health. Every year, they wet abrasive blast and paint over 100 galvanised lattice towers, expertly managing the challenges of working outdoors in all weather conditions while adhering to strict specifications. The TTP knowledge is integral to their approach, ensuring best practices are consistently applied throughout their projects.

Fuelling the work CAKE is currently undertaking is its key company value: ‘Be the best at what you do’. They achieve this by providing all their employees with the first-rate training necessary to develop their careers within the industry, ensuring all staff are equipped with both the skills and knowledge needed to carry out their work to the highest standard. It is here that the training offered by Corrodere Academy comes in, propelling students to learn, discover and, most importantly, succeed in their chosen careers. We are proud to play a part in CAKE’s important and exciting operations and look forward to our continued professional relationship with CAKE Commercial Services as a much valued affiliate training provider.
