As part of our global network of Train the painter affiliates, we’re proud to introduce José from Coating Consultancy Services — an approved training provider in Mexico. With decades of experience in corrosion control and technical training, José shares insights into the importance of coatings education, the evolving industry landscape, and the growing impact of Train the painter across Mexico.

Can you tell us about the background of your company and why you decided to become a Train the painter affiliate?

Our company focus is on providing consulting services to clients, mainly based in the oil and gas sector of the industry. Within these services, technical training plays a very important role in creating awareness on corrosion control through protective coatings. Throughout my career, I have been involved in technical training. I started working for a coating manufacturer and was appointed technical training manager for four years; I have been a NACE (now AMPP) CIP instructor for 25 years and, for the past four years, I have also been a Train the painter instructor.

I knew of the Train the painter programme for many years now, when SSPC was providing the training in the US, and have always been convinced that it is a very beneficial tool to provide accreditation and recognition to a segment of the market that has always been neglected. For many years there have been training and certification programmes for welders, but for a very long time, blasters and painters had always been left out. We saw the Train the painter programme as an excellent opportunity to provide world-class training to this trade. And it falls well into the mission of our company.

What industries in Mexico benefit most from Train the painter qualifications?

Basically, all industries should benefit from the Train the painter qualifications, but the highest paying segments, such as oil and gas, where corrosion pays a heavy toll on its assets, and the costs caused by poor surface preparation and application techniques are higher.

How has the demand for industrial coating training evolved in Mexico?

Mexico is still a work in progress. There is demand for coating training, but mainly focused on supervisory and engineering positions. We are still working hard to create awareness in companies, both contractors and asset owners, of the benefits of training the workforce.

How do you see the future of industrial painting and protective coatings in Mexico?

Mexico has a very diverse industry, ranging from OEM and structural steel to a very strong oil and gas sector, with many refineries, more than 10,500 km of new (less than 10 years old) gas pipelines (36”–42” in diameter), many offshore oil platforms, and other energy-generating plants.

What advice would you give to companies or individuals considering Train the painter certification?

Safety, quality and costs are always the main concerns in a coating and lining project, and the bottom line for any contractor — productivity — is affected by any one of these factors or their combination. There are substantial benefits in training the workforce; all point to reducing accidents in the workplace and increasing productivity by, among other things, reducing or eliminating reworks.

If a company owner is worried about training his or her workers and then they leave the company to work elsewhere, think of the consequences of not training them and its impact on your productivity and quality.

Looking ahead

Through Coating Consultancy Services, José continues to champion the importance of education, awareness, and technical competence across Mexico’s coatings industry. As an approved Train the painter affiliate, his mission aligns perfectly with our global goal — to raise standards, empower workers, and deliver excellence in corrosion protection.
