Hempel raises the bar for cruise coatings
The cruise industry is under increasing scrutiny to reduce its environmental footprint while maintaining high levels of operational performance. Frequent voyages in warm waters, where fouling pressure is at its highest, create challenges that directly impact both fuel efficiency and sustainability targets.
In response, Hempel has unveiled Hempaguard Ultima, a next-generation hull coating designed specifically with cruise operations in mind. Building on the proven success of Hempaguard X7, the new system introduces a two-layer structure that separates the performance roles of each coat. The result is a combination of long-term fouling defence and improved fuel efficiency.
At the heart of Ultima’s innovation is Hempaguard XL, a biocide-free silicone topcoat that not only prevents biofouling but also delivers measurable efficiency gains. Operators can expect up to 21% fuel savings, extended idle time without fouling, and reduced CO₂ emissions – helping them stay aligned with both IMO regulations and ESG objectives.
The benefits aren’t limited to the environment. Longer intervals between drydockings, improved scheduling flexibility and lower operating costs all add up to stronger business performance. Unsurprisingly, the response from cruise operators has been overwhelmingly positive, with growing adoption across both retrofits and newbuilds.
