At the beginning of 2015 the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) announced (via the Industrial Strategy: Construction 2025) that industry should only accept cards schemes carrying the CSCS logo with no equivalents accepted.
They went further and listed the requirements for card schemes (including SSPC Trainthepainter) to meet if they wished to qualify for the CSCS logo. These included:
- Agreeing appropriate qualifications for each occupation
- Setting a minimum standard for skilled occupations at NVQ Level 2
- Introducing smart technology by 2020.
The objective of this action is to provide the construction industry with a scheme that delivers a consistent means of recognising that an individual has achieved the agreed standard of qualification and skill in the occupation they are working in and to give the industry confidence in that scheme.
Over the last several months SSPC Trainthepainter have been working with CSCS to develop plans to meet the CLC’s requirements. We are pleased to announce that SSPC Trainthepainter has met all but one of the CLC’s requirements and have committed to fulfilling the last requirement by developing smart technology. As a result, we have signed an agreement with CSCS enabling us to display the CSCS logo on our cards.
The CSCS logo displayed on SSPC Trainthepainter cards will guarantee that the cardholder has achieved the standard necessary to carry out their job. It also means we can introduce efficiencies into the scheme by reducing the number of certification cards our members hold.
Applicators who hold a Protective Coatings Applicator card (Bronze or higher) will receive cards bearing the CSCS logo, indicating that they are recognised as a skilled worker. This means that members will not have to apply for a separate CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card.
David Eyre, Project Manager at the Trainthepainter scheme commented, “this is a major benefit for all of our members and such a partnership highlights the quality and key skills that the SSPC Trainthepainter delivers.”
Gordon Jenkins, CSCS Director of operations said “CSCS is pleased to see that SSPC Trainthepainter have taken the initiative to become an official partner with CSCS. The partnership demonstrates SSPC’s Trainthepainter’s commitment to meeting the requirements of the CLC and ensuring construction site workers are appropriately qualified. In the process, we are all playing our part in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites. CSCS looks forward to a long and productive relationship between our two organisations.”
